Chapter 21

New York

News reports continued to come in. The world news media had begun covering little else. The world sat glued to radios and televisions listening to reports of whale attacks. One of the most spectacular occurred off the coast of the Galapagos Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. Peter Smith came on the air at noon with a special report. He began:

"As part of our special coverage of the crisis in our oceans we are bringing you this special report. It was 4:00 PM yesterday off the coast of the Galapagos Islands, the islands made famous by Darwin when he developed his theory of evolution by studying the animals in this remote corner of the world. Yesterday a tourist boat was picking up a group of tourists for the trip back to Ecuador, an open ocean voyage of 64 hours. The 50 tourists had just left the islands after spending three days photographing and studying the unusual animals that live there. For the rest of our report, we will switch you by satellite to Carlos Valequez, stationed in Ecuador."

The cameras switched to Ecuador:

"It appeers, that soon afta, thee shep left thee islend, they encounteered a pod of whales. Thee whales chargeed thee shep. Three whales struck the shep at thee same time on the port side. Since most of thee paasingeers were on deck when thee ship was struck, many of thee paasingeers were thrown about with five going over boaed by thee inpact. The shep steering was damageed and thee Captain could not turn around to peck up thee paasingeers."

"We are told that some brave crew members were attempteed to launch life boats to rescue thee passingeers in the water, but these boats were attacked and sunk by thee whales. Thee Ecuadorian Navy was called and sheps were sent to the scene. It is reported that at leest 15 passingers and crew are missing."

And so it went, report after report, more simple attacks on moored boats or docks but an occasional disaster like the Equardorian situation was being reported. The noon report also had two other unusual notes. The first came from Sea World Marine Park management that Peter reported:

"Representatives of Anheuser Busch, the parent company for Sea World Marine Parks, reported today that it had suspended all marine park shows and it has ordered all trainers to stay out of the tanks. The reason given was the strange behavior of the whales. They would make no further comments."

"Finally, the United Nations has called a special meeting of the General Assembly tomorrow to discuss the current terror in the oceans."

"We will be back for our regularly scheduled show at our usual time, or as always, to bring you significant updates as they occur.”
